Ban Ki-moon thanked Russia for the transfer of the Olympic facilities.
Before the construction of the bobsleigh track, mountain Olympic village and water intake was planned for Pear Ridge - the most important eco-territory.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon thanked the authorities of Russia for the decision to postpone the construction of sports facilities of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, a protected area in a safe place for the environment. This is the UN secretary-general said in his speech to the delegates XIII Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. Welcoming the decision of Russia's Government, Ban Ki-moon has put him on a par with other measures to create an environmentally safe system for the Olympic Games.
By decision of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the construction of the bobsleigh track, mountain Olympic village and water intake was derived from the Grushevy Ridge.
According to initial plans, these objects were to be built at Pear Ridge - the most valuable natural area, which was previously part of the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, and is now adjacent to the reserve, as a buffer zone, a member of the National Park.
Sochi Olympic Organizing Committee signed a memorandum with UNEP, the cancers which the experts of the UN Environment will promote the highest environmental standards in the preparation and conduct of the Games in 2014.
